The second generation (C2) 1963 Corvette was a ground-breaking design in many ways. The independent rear suspension, mounted in a rigid chassis, was wrapped in a sleekly sculpted fiberglass body badged as the new Sting Ray. Chevrolet designers created ingenious hide-away headlamps, which continued through the C5 Corvettes. The radical new styling continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts around the world.

Ever notice that many automotive fanatics don’t know what the C2 Corvette headlights look like when they are ON? In my opinion, it’s because many C2 vette owners avoid showing their pride and joy with the lights rolled around. Not to knock Duntov, Mitchell and Shinoda (GM leaders and designers), but they had a choice to make with the technology available in the early 60’s. Stylish closed and ungainly open, or visa-versa. They did great with what they had. Kudos to them all around.

My goal in creating these custom headlights was to achieve today what was out of grasp over 50 years ago. Along with an elegant style when the headlights are hidden, my new headlights perform much better and are aesthetically pleasing while they are open. I designed them to be bolt-in replacements for owners that don’t want to jeopardize the value of a restored classic in a major way. Paying homage to the style and intent of the GM team, I wanted mechanically-hidden headlights. I also wanted to stick to the quad-lamp arrangement while shooting for a real-world operating design- not just something for trailer queens. I believe that those goals were accomplished reasonably well.

THE PRODUCT

You will receive the new bolt-in headlight assembly. This includes the mechanical components, complete with LED projectors and drivers, servo actuators, hide-away lid swing frames. The kit's fiberglass lids need to be fit by an auto-body technician. Bonding epoxy, sealing silicon, and body filler is not included. The UV and scratch resistant polycarbonate lens and gasketed water-tight enclosures create a controlled-humidity environment for the lamp assemblies. The lamp units are high-end Morimoto's outstanding M-LED2.0 bi-xenon projector lamps. Each lamp pair are installed on a mount that has 4-point aiming adjustment. A full manual is provided to ensure the installation process goes smoothly.

ABOUT

ME

My love of both design and cars began at a young age. Model cars, slot cars and toys always got a dose of customization when I was a kid. Although I very much appreciate fully restored vehicles, it has always been my love for design that drew me to modifying them. When I was 17, I sold my ʽ70 RS Camaro and purchased a basket-case ʽ71 Corvette coupe. I designed and created a unique clam-shell tilt front end, with lights in the grill area. My next custom was my ʽ80 vette, which again had stationary lights in the grill area. I pulled my wrecked and rotting ʽ63 convertible from a farmer’s field in ʽ91 and had over 20 years to plan her modifications. It was a joy to finally get the car back together enough to start conceptualizing and prototyping with the C2 headlights. I spent the better part of nine months working primarily on the design and fabrication. In regard to my hobby, I love nothing more than dreaming up an idea and refining it into reality. My goal is to please my toughest critic… ME.
